Bay Transit, the public transportation division of Bay Aging, is pleased to announce that the 2023 edition of the Bay Transit – Rappahannock Community College (RCC) Scholarship will be $2,000. With funds generated from sponsorships of Bay Transit’s annual ‘Art in Transit’ judged competition, as well as a $1,000 match from the RCC Educational Foundation, Bay Transit was able to double the scholarship fund. The Bay Transit Scholarship is now a $2,000 scholarship awarded each spring for one of Bay Transit’s frontline employees, the employee’s children, or employee’s grandchildren, who are, or will be, attending RCC. The scholarship is one of several measures Bay Transit has taken to bolster their ongoing frontline employee recruitment and retention efforts to help ensure continued excellent customer service standards during the current tight labor market.
Bay Transit Director Ken Pollock had hoped to increase the total scholarship amount to $1,500 or even $2,000 this year. “We were optimistic that sponsors would really get behind increased funding of the Bay Transit – RCC Scholarship this year, and they certainly have,” Pollock noted. “I’m thrilled to report we have already received pledges of support from virtually every organization that sponsored Art in Transit in 2022. Some, including B.H. Baird and the RCC Educational Foundation have pledged even more this year.”
“We are pleased to see Bay Transit continue their scholarship initiative again in 2023. This scholarship continues an important collaboration that is good for Bay Transit, RCC, and the many communities we serve,” said RCC President, Dr. Shannon Kennedy.
Sue Farmer, B.H. Baird Insurance’s Commercial Lines Team Leader, and longtime RCC Educational Foundation board member is passionate about the importance of education. “I was an educator for over thirty years,” Farmar said. “When Bay Transit gave us the opportunity to support their scholarship for frontline employees, we jumped at the chance to make a pledge to Art in Transit again this year.”
“As an alumnus of RCC, as well as board director with both RCC and Bay Aging, it gives me tremendous satisfaction to see Bay Transit continue this initiative,” said Stanley Clarke. “The Bay Transit – RCC scholarship demonstrates their commitment to continuing education and is a wonderful benefit available to both full and part-time Bay Transit employees and their families.”
The winner of the 2023 Bay Transit – RCC Scholarship will be selected by April 7, and announced to the public shortly thereafter.
“We are hoping to get the scholarship winner to attend the Art in Transit reception as well,” Pollock added.
The 2023 Art in Transit award winners will be recognized at the Art in Transit 2023 reception at the RAL Art Center in Kilmarnock on Friday night, May 19, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. The culmination of the reception will once again occur when a copy of the first-place entry is unveiled on the side of a Bay Transit bus.
