Trojans Drop Fifth 1-Run Contest Of Season

Essex suffered its fifth one loss run of the season on May 7 as the Trojans were the victims of a 5-4 walk-off victory by Lancaster in a Northern Neck District contest played at Dream Fields in Kilmarnock.

The Trojans concluded regular season play with a 5-5 NND ledger and an 11-8 mark overall.

Essex finished in fourth place in the NND standings and was slated to face district regular season champion Rappahannock in a tournament semifinal on May 14. Northumberland met Lancaster in the other semifinal. The tournament title game is slated for May 16 at the highest seed.

Six errors proved to be the Trojans’ undoing against Lancaster which scored just two earned runs. Two of the Trojans’ errors occurred in the outfield during the bottom of the seventh to help Lancaster produce the game-deciding run.

Jay Jeter led the Trojans offensively with three hits, while Kyran Howard, Keion Hence, Hunter Byrd, and Damari Young had two hits apiece.

Trailing 4-1, Essex knotted the score with three runs in the fifth.

Jeter and Howard led off the inning with singles and Hence followed with a run-scoring double.

A Noah Thompson ground out scored Howard to trim the deficit to 4-3.

Hence scored the game-tying run on a passed ball.

Meanwhile, Rappahannock claimed the NND regular season crown with a 3-1 win over Northumberland on May 9 in Warsaw.

Braden Hayes struck out 11, allowed just one hit and an unearned run in a 113-pitch, six-inning outing.

Daniel Thrift tossed a scoreless seventh inning to earn a save.

Josh Thomas and Ethan White had two hits apiece for the Raiders (14-3 overall).
