In a recent article in The Atlantic, a title of an opinion piece was “Sometimes a Parade is Just a Parade?” But, is it really? June 14 is the 250th Anniversary of the Army which should be celebrated. Should it be combined with the President’s birthday which is also that day? I don’t think so as we know this is more of a show for Trump than celebrating the Anniversary of the Army.
Trump has finally gotten his parade. 7,000 troops to march through the streets of Washington, D.C. Helicopters buzzing overhead and tanks rolling down Constitution Avenue destroying the asphalt. All of this at a mere cost of $45 million. “Peanuts” according to Trump. Taxpayers are bearing the cost of this “parade,” as Trump withholds tens of millions of dollars allocated for research grants, such as cancer. Even more egregious is the number of federal programs that have been cut that stand to help many Americans – certainly more than a military parade. $45 million could help our Veterans who depend on SNAP and Medicaid. As one veteran said, “he fired those who served. Then threw a parade for himself.”
On June 14, Flag Day, wave a flag for our soldiers in uniform or thank a veteran for his or her service. More importantly, donate to “Buy A Vet A Meal” founded by retired Army Colonel Herb Jones after funding for food was cut. The mission is to “feed, educate and bring gratitude and community back to veterans.” (buyavetamealmeal.org) Your donation will be more meaningful and satisfying than sending a birthday card to the White House.
