Route 628 (Dorrell Road/Spring Cottage Road) is now open at the bridge over the Mattaponi River, at the King and Queen and King William county line. Crews started removing signs last week from the 22-mile detour after completing the $4.2 million emergency repair project. During a routine inspection in March 2023, crews identified significant deterioration in key bridge elements, and VDOT closed the bridge for motorist safety. VDOT accelerated the emergency repair design and schedule after the closure. In 2024, crews began work to replace the bridge’s entire superstructure, which includes new bridge beams, deck, rails, and travel surface. Crews finished ahead of schedule to reopen the bridge and road before June 2025, the anticipated completion date. An average of 295 vehicles a day crossed the bridge on Dorrell Road/Spring Cottage Road.
