The Three Rivers Soil and Water Conservation District hosted the “Splash into Summer: Watershed Discoveries” half-day summer camp last week. Funded by the purchase of Chesapeake Bay License Plates through the Chesapeake Bay Restoration Fund, the camp offered six Essex County students a unique opportunity to explore and connect with their local watershed. With support from community partners like Friends of the Rappahannock and Friends of the Refuge, campers enjoyed a variety of outdoor experiences. These included kayaking on Cat Point Creek, learning about local history at the Essex Museum, cooling off at the splash pad in Tappahannock Central Park, fishing and walking trails at the Hutchinson Unit, and discovering the natural wonders of the Wilna Unit. Above, students are photographed while visiting the Wilna Unit, where they learned about managing invasive species and cooled off with a dip in the Rappahannock River. They are pictured holding a replica of the Chesapeake Bay license plate.
