James Edward “Scooter” Byrd was 24-years-old when he was murdered in his home in 2016. His case remains unsolved.

The King and Queen County Sheriff’s Office says it is utilizing all technology at its disposal in an attempt to crack a seven year-old old homicide case.

James Edward “Scooter” Byrd, 24, was shot and killed when one or two people entered his residence at 6200 Newtown Road during the early morning hours of August 16, 2016.

His younger brother was in the residence and was unharmed.

The King and Queen Sheriff’s Office reported at that time that it received a 911 call at approximately 2:15 a.m. from a subject who was in the home when the incident occurred. The sheriff’s office responded to the scene and had two officers on scene within 15 minutes. Medic units arrived thereafter and found Byrd had been shot several times. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

After further investigation it was determined that no forced entry was made. The scene was then processed by the King and Queen Sheriff’s with the Virginia State Police. The victim was transported to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner where the crime was ruled a homicide. This case is still open and ongoing, at this time.

The murder weapon was later recovered in the city of Richmond, and confirmed by laboratory analysis.

The sheriff’s office recognized the seventh anniversary of the murder with a release entitled “A Call For Justice.”

“With new developments in technology and a new partnership with the FBI, we are committed to this investigation and finding out who ripped a hole in the lives of Scooter’s family and friends,” the sheriff’s office said.

“This family deserves closure, and with the help of the community hopefully the King and Queen Sheriff’s Office can give that to them. Our department is dedicated to finding justice for Scooter,” says Sheriff W.R. “Rob” Balderson.

The Mattaponi Crime Solvers is offering a reward of up to $1,000 for any tips and information pertaining to his murder.

“It has been long enough,” the sheriff’s office said. “If you have solid facts, please reach out to Investigator Phillip Cusick at [email protected] or through dispatch at 804-785-7400.”
