Trick or treating will take place in Tappahannock on Friday, October 31.

Tappahannock Town Code Section 14-43 prohibits any person over the age of 12 from wearing any mask, hood or other device whereby a substantial portion of their face is hidden or covered so as to conceal the identity of the wearer, to be or appear in any public place, or to be or appear upon any private property in the town without first having obtained from the owner or tenant thereof consent to do so in writing.

This section, however, does not apply to the wearing of traditional Halloween costumes within 200 feet of a private or public Halloween party.

Tappahannock Town Code Section 14-44 – which refers to trick or treating – prohibits the wearing of any mask, hood or other device as defined in Section 14-43, to be or appear in any public place or appear on any private property in the town between the hours of 8 p.m. and 7 a.m. on Halloween evening and night. This means trick or treating is allowed in town until 8 p.m. on Halloween night.

Also, Section 18.2-154 of the Code of Virginia makes it a felony to throw objects at a motor vehicle when occupied. This includes the throwing of eggs.

Extra patrols of neighborhoods will be provided, however parents should accompany young children while trick or treating. Be safe and take care of small children in the streets.
