All-State Baseball, Softball Teams Announced

The Virginia High School League recently announced all-state teams for Class 1 baseball and softball.

Only those players selected to all-region first teams are eligible for selection to the All-State team. Each All-State selection committee is comprised of eight coaches (two from each Region). Baseball

Auburn senior first-baseman/pitcher Zac McGlothlin is the Class 1 Player of the Year, and Auburn head coach Eric Altizer is the Class 1 Coach of the Year.

McGlothlin, a versatile 6’0”, 180-pound first baseman and left-handed pitcher, posted impressive numbers this spring. As an offensive threat, McGlothlin batted .471 (40-85) with 40 RBI, three home runs, eight doubles, and one triple. A big-game pitcher, he posted a 6-0 record with two saves, 1.70 ERA, 38K, and only 13BB. In Auburn’s run to the state title, McGlothlin went 4-0 in the postseason, earning wins in the Mountain Empire District championship game, the Region C title game and pitching the Eagles to victories in the state quarterfinals and semifinals. A second-team all-state selection last year at first base, he remains uncommitted with plans to attend New River Community College in the fall.

For the fourth time in his 20 seasons, Auburn’s legendary coach, Eric Altizer, led the Eagles to a state championship with a convincing 10-0 win over Fort Chiswell in the Class 1 finals. His team ended the season on a 17-game winning streak and a 26-1 record. Altizer has a career record of 303-123 during his two stints as Auburn’s head coach, from 1999 to 2008 and 2016 to the present. His teams won state titles in 2017, 2019, 2021, and this season. It’s Altizer’s third time receiving the state coach of the year award (2017, 2019, and 2025). Softball

Eastside senior pitcher Braelyn Hall is the Class 1 Player of the Year, and Eastside head coach Suzi Atwood is the Class 1 Coach of the Year.

A hard-throwing right-hander, the 5’9” Hall completed one of the most dominating pitching seasons in VHSL history while leading Eastside’s championship run. The Middle Tennessee State signee pitched 38 of the 45 innings during the regional and state tournament games. She threw a perfect game in the Spartan’s 4-0 semifinal win over Buffalo Gap. She needed 72 pitches to face 21 Bison batters and striking out 14 in seven innings. A day later, in the finals, Hall struck out 14 and allowed three hits in the 3-0 win over Auburn. She finished the year with a 16-1 record, a 0.77 ERA in 118 innings pitched, and struck out 240 batters, producing a .492 WHIP while limiting opponents to a .090 batting average. Offensively, Hall batted .369 with four home runs, 29 RBI, and scored 29 runs.

Atwood, the Class 1 Coach of the Year for a second straight season, led Eastside to the program’s second state title with a 3-0 win over Auburn in the state championships game. A year removed from a runnerup finish in last year’s Class 1 finals. Her Spartans finished with a 27-2 record and went on to win 15 straight games to end the season. Atwood finished her 21st season with 360 career wins, including a 1-0 state title win over John Battle in 2012.
