Essex earned a split in its season opening baseball/softball games last week against Mathews.
Essex won the baseball game 7-0, while the Lady Trojans dropped a 23-10 decision to the Lady Blue Devils. Baseball
Senior Noah Thompson tossed a one-hitter and struck out 12-0 in the Trojans’ 7-0 blanking of Mathews.
Thompson faced 25 batters as Mathews also produced baserunners via a walk and two hit batters.
Thompson tossed 103 pitches in his routegoing performance.
“I though I pitched really well,” said Thompson, who is entrenched as the team’s pitching ace. “We’ve got some really good guys on this team and we should do really well this season.”
“We got some really strong pitching from Noah today,” Essex coach Reed Harmon observed. “Our defense was pretty good and we should be pretty solid once we get our freshman shortstop (Kameron Gaines) going, our defense should be pretty good.”
Gaines made a running catch in shallow center field and turned a 6-3 double play.
The Trojans committed just a single error.
Thompson, Hunter Byrd, and Kyran Howard led the Trojans offensively with two hits apiece. Howard and Byrd had two RBIs apiece, while Byrd also stole three bases.
“I felt pretty confident at the plate today,” Howard said. “Noah did his thing and our defense played well behind him.”
Thompson’s batterymate, Jacob Durham, said the senior hurler was on his game.
“He did really well and our defense was good behind him,” Durham said.
Essex broke open a close game (it was 1-0 through four innings) with six runs in the fifth inning.
Howard and Byrd had two hist apiece during the frame.

Makiryn Williams’s solo home run highlighted the team’s offensive outing.
Team members are seniors Octavia Floyd, Macey Revere, and Makiryn Williams, juniors Meraiah Wilson, Alivia Brown, and Aryeon Robinson, sophomores Kenedi Campbell, Mirakel King, Malajiah Carey, and Anasia Harris, and freshman Tai’Leah Cowles.
The head coach is Erika Robinson. Her chief assistant coach is Shavontae Campbell.
