A controversial game-ending double play spoiled a seventh inning rally by Essex.
The Trojans’ loaded the bases with one out when Northumberland turned Hence’s slow roller into a double play.
The result spoiled a strong mound outing by Essex freshman Jake Richardson. He proved to be tough through six innings before running out of steam in the sixth inning when Northumberland produced a crucial tack-on run.
Essex, which stranded eight base runners, managed seven hits off Northumberland ace pitcher John Withers who struck out eight and walked one.
Northumberland (3-2 NND, 7-2 overall) collected three of its five hits off Richardson in a three-run second inning.
