Northumberland racked up more than 500 yards total offense Friday night and the figure was more than enough to overcome a plethora of penalties as the Indians eliminated a pesky Middlesex team 46-14 in a Region 1A football quarterfinal contest played in Claraville.

With the win, the Indians (8-3) advance to a semifinal showdown with unbeaten Essex (11-0) Friday night in Tappahannock.

“I told our guys if we had been playing Essex tonight we would have lost,” Northumberland coach Aaron Lewis said afterward. “We’ve got to clean up a lot of stuff. Middlesex had a good game plan and we had mental errors that we cannot have (against Essex).”

Northumberland QB Tyreek Lundy added impressive numbers to his all-state candidacy. He finished with 397 yards total offense (232 yards passing and 167 rushing) and added 54 yards on a pair of punt returns.

“I really think he’s clearly the best quarterback (in Class 1),” Lewis observed. “He’s such a dual threat and is a coach’s nightmare for the other team. I’m glad he’s on my side.”
