The Essex High volleyball team displayed flashes of excellent play during its October 21 home court match against Northern Neck District foe Colonial Beach.

There simply wasn’t enough of those flashes as the Lady Trojans dropped a 4-set encounter to the Lady Drifters.

Colonial Beach won the match 25-11, 24-26, 25-10, and 25-20.

Essex (3-14) played its best volleyball in the second and fourth sets. The Lady Trojans almost forced a decisive fifth set after taking a 20-19 lead in game three. However, CB rattled off the next 6 points, including 5 on winners, to finish in fifth place in the 6-team NND.

Essex finished in sixth place after suffering a season-ending 3-set loss to NND lead- ing Lancaster on October 23.

“We played as team in the second and fourth sets,” Essex coach James Jeter said. “They communicated and played well in those sets. In the other two sets we couldn’t get it together. We got caught watching the ball too much.”

Essex closed out its season on a 31-match Northern Neck District losing streak dating back to the 2021 season (Essex did not field a team in 2022).

Lancaster won the NND regular season title with a 10-0 record.
