Essex third baseman Makiryn Williams prepares to toss out a Colonial Beach runner at first base.

Makiryn Williams hit an inside the-park homer, Kenedi Campbell belted a run-scoring triple and scored on a subsequent error, and second baseman Meraiah Wilson made two big defensive plays in the top of the seventh inning as Essex edged Colonial Beach 6-5.

The win was the first for the Lady Trojans in Northern Neck District competition.

Colonial Beach put a runner on first with none out in the seventh, but Wilson made a diving stab of a grounder and tagged second base with her glove hand while on the ground for the inning’s initial out.

After pitcher Tai’Leah Cowles registered a strikeout, Wilson made a back-pedaling catch of a pop-up to end the contest.

“Meraiah did an awesome job,” Essex coach Erika Robinson said. “We’ve been working on angles all week and she did that tonight.”

Williams, who homered in the third, finished with two hits and 3 RBIs

Two days later, the teams got together for a contest of offensive fireworks as Essex posted a 25-14 come-from-behind victory.

Essex trailed 6-0 before exploding for 10 fourth inning runs. The Lady Trojans later added 11 sixth inning tallies.

The Lady Trojans benefited from 19 walks issued by three Colonial Beach pitchers.

Williams had a big outing with a homer, a double and 5 RBIs. Aryeon Robinson, Malaijah Carey, and Campbell scored 4 runs apiece.

Essex (2-4 NND, 6-8 overall) travels to Lancaster today (May 7) and finishes regular season play against Westmoreland next week.
