The Essex Lady Trojans held visiting West Point scoreless during the second quarter while constructing an 18-6 halftime advantage en route to a season-opening 39-31 victory over the Lady Pointers on December 2.
Morgan Self and Aryeon Robinson paced Essex in the scoring column with 13 points apiece, while Amani Brown nailed a trio of 3-pointers en route to an 11-point outing.
“Obviously, we have a lot to work on,” Essex coach Jonathan Mercer said afterward. “This was our first game and we haven’t had a lot of practice time.”
The Lady Trojans managed just two baskets during the opening eight minutes and trailed 6-4 entering the second stanza.
“We kinda had first game jitters and started off slow,” Mercer observed. “We managed to get things together, but we’ve got some things we need to iron out.”
Brown’s first 3-ball of the night put Essex in front for good at 7-6 just 32 seconds into the second quarter.
Self recorded five second quarter points, while Robinson scored four as Essex built an 18-6 lead by halftime.

Essex led by as many as 13 points twice during the final 16 minutes, while West Point got as close as 8 points over the final two quarters.
Self, who was the focus of West Point’s defense, posted a doubledouble as she also collected 10 rebounds.
“We played pretty well, but we have a few things we still need to work on,” she remarked. “I feel like I can do a better job at shooting and communicating. Every time I got the ball, they were crashing down on me and it was a little frustrating, but I didn’t let it get to me.”
Robinson also posted a doubledouble as she grabbed 12 rebounds.
Essex connected on just 23 percent of its shots from the field and committed 21 turnovers.
West Point converted 31 percent of its attempts from the floor and committed 22 turnovers.
The Lady Trojans’ game scheduled for December 5 at home against Franklin was postponed due to inclement weather. No makeup date has been announced.
Essex will next play at home on December 11 against Middlesex.
