Friday marked a new era for the Tappahannock Art Gallery. After months of renovations that were necessary because of a flood coming through the ceiling last fall, all was set for the public. Within this space that is fresh, bright and reorganized is the work both of the member artists and a one-person show of photography by Rob Rudick located in the exhibition gallery that changes shows monthly. The opening reception brought out lots of people who enjoyed both collections of work, as well as the refreshments.

Rudick (from Colonial Beach and Takoma Park, Maryland)offered up a vast array of photographs that span decades of his work. Starting with traditional black and white pieces under glass, these display strong composition, keen observations and bits of humor. Beyond those 10 or so, is a broad cross-section of subject matter all in color. Some are treated traditionally and some with a twist. Rob has developed a technique whereby he prints his work on watercolor paper and then finishes each with a wax coating. This means that he doesn’t need to put his work under glass, but more importantly the work has a softness and otherness that suggests a real painterly approach. It is true that with some of his work the question is, is this really a photograph?

Whether it is flowers, vegetables, cars, landscapes from near and far, observations of interesting interiors, there is something for everyone here. Take advantage of this grouping of more than 40 photographs while you have the time. The show closes on April 29.

And come and enjoy the brightness, organization and simple beauty of the new gallery. A new small seating area in one front window suggests moments discussing art or pulling out one of the art books to peruse. The new physical presence launches TAG into the future being the best it can be. Open regularly on Tuesday, Thursday – Saturday from noon to 4 p.m. On Farmers’ Market days the opening time will be 9 a.m., so market visitors can easily slip in to see the latest exhibit.
