The Essex Lady Trojans aimed for at least a tie atop the final Northern Neck District softball standings when they visited Lancaster on May 7.

Essex carried a 7-2 Northern Neck District mark into the contest. Westmoreland was also 7-2 in district play entering this week’s action. Westmoreland was slated to face Rappahannock on May 7.

The Northern Neck District tournament will open with semifinal action on May 14 at the highest seeds.

The tournament’s championship game will be played May 16 at 5 p.m. at the highest seed.

Region A tournament play will begin with quarterfinal action on Thursday, May 23. Essex 12, Colonial Beach 1

Essex closed out play last week with a 12-1 five inning triumph over the Lady Drifters.

Kylie Jones and Ty’Niya Ball combined on a no-hitter.

Jones struck out 11 and walked three in four innings in the pitching circle. Ball pitched the final inning, striking out one and walking one.

Jones helped her cause at the plate with a pair of doubles and a triple among her four hits on the day. She also drove home five runs.

Morgan Self and Kenedi Campbell contributed three hits apiece to the Lady Trojans’ 14-hit attack. Self drove in four runs. Essex 16, Northumberland 15

Jones collected four hits in six trips to the plate as the Lady Trojans held on for a 16- 15 victory over Northumberland.

Essex built a 16-10 lead after 5 1/2 innings and held off a Northumberland rally that saw the Lady Indians plate three runs in the sixth and two in the seventh.

Northumberland stranded the game-tying run on third base when Ball induced a final out on a ground ball to shortstop Amani Brown.

Aryeon Robinson and Brown contributed three hits apiece to the winning effort which featured 15 hits and nine walks. Essex 6, Westmoreland 1

In a game resumed after being suspended due to a lightning on April 15, the Lady Trojans got another multi-hit outing from Jones who finished 4-for-4 in the Essex victory.

The contest was suspended in the bottom of the fourth inning with Essex holding a 4-0 advantage.

Essex added a run upon the game’s resumption and scored once more in the sixth.

Jones drove in three runs, while Brown scored twice.

Jones also earned the pitching win with nine strikeouts and one walk.
